On 25 January, 2009, I turned up to do the haggis routine at the Orles Barn Hotel in Ross-on-Wye in the UK West Midlands. Some pipers areplay-and-runperformers, perhaps on their way to another event. At New Year or Hogmanay, this is very common. I follow an eat-and-play style by taking my wife along so that we mix with the diners. If Scottish dancing is included, unlike the pipe-and-run pipers who seldom recite Burns, I like to call the dances and help people enjoy them by learning, thereby enjoying the whole occasion to the full.
Not long before I was due to perform the Address to a Haggis, to our great surprise, in walked Tina and Alan Wood of Wyenot.com. They run their news website which covers the whole area for miles around. Alan has taken an extract from the WYENOT news on 28 January 2009 and it's on the next page. Thanks, Alan.
The diners enjoyed seeing me bob down to pass under arches with the pipes skirling. I hope they enjoyed the "Philosophical Reply from the Haggis" after it had been addressed. Years ago, there was the TV show "Morecambe and Wise". Ernie Wise was always keen to render his latest poem "... what I wrote". The Reply to the Haggis is one what I too, wrote.
On now to the video. Click "Haggis video" to the left. Then progress to "7 Feb 2010". Another Alan and Tina production is on the Author page - see "Piper 5" here.
